LUNCH CLUB UPDATE

fruit-lunch-club.jpg

After a delay of over a year due to the pandemic, our very successful Lunch  Club for People Living with Dementia, returned to the church hall on a restricted basis.
Throughout the previous year, members and volunteers met in small groups for coffee & a chat at local Gardening Centres, coffee houses and park cafes.  These were limited as people were afraid to mix, it had to be outside, masks had to be worn at all times etc., so it was a very slow start but we felt it kept our members involved and the club running.

Eventually, some restrictions were lifted and we returned to Mearns Kirk Halls for coffee and chat 1pm-3pm.  We had a low number returning for various reasons (afraid to be mixing, no movement within the hall, stubbornly high COVID numbers in East Renfrewshire etc) but in October, we opened up the club again to meet till 4pm without the need for carers to stay.  We had a new group attending who mostly seemed to settle in well.  We restarted our tabletop activities, music was live again and our waiting list grew.  As of November, we have widened our hours again to our original 12-4pm.  Our members enjoy lunch, tabletop activities, afternoon tea then finishing with music from our ‘resident host’, the wonderful Jim Milroy.

We were very sad to lose a lot of our previous members due to deterioration in their condition or to moving into care homes.  Alas we had to attend some funerals.  We have a healthy programme planned e.g. Christmas party, guest speakers, reminiscent films, outings, Burns Supper, sporting memories, Alastair McDonald the folk singer, flower arranging & bulb planting, magician and a dancing display!!! to name but a few. Fun times ahead hopefully.

We continue to serve our community, to give family and carers a welcome break and most importantly enhance our members lives while living with this dreadful illness.
