Christian Aid Week - 2019

Report on week of events!

With our own Church Hall being closed for refurbishment this year, there was a real possibility that the Plant Sale may not have happened , but the kind folk and Minister at Newton Mearns Parish Church offered us one of their halls to host the event and on Saturday 4th May our annual plant sale in aid of Christian Aid went ahead.

The plants again were supplied by McLarens and, as usual, we had a tremendous display and variety of beddings, herbaceous, hanging baskets and filled pots.  With having the sale a week earlier and the warning of frost in the forecast I was a little apprehensive, but the sale went very well, attendance was high and nearly all stock sold.  At the time of going to press, the sum raised is approximately £1,069 which is a marvellous amount.

Thank you to Violet, Susan, Lawrence, Jim, Gail, Kirsty, Sue, Katie and Ellie for all their help on the day and for helping me set up and dismantle everything and for Joe who brought over the tables—a great team effort.

Thanks also to everyone at Newton Mearns Parish Church for making the sale happen and for their warm welcome and help, especially Stuart and Susan who spread the word via social media, the Extra and the Community Matters Magazine and to Julie in the office.

Some great photos from Plant Sale with volunteers Katie and Ellie Watson –Doris and Sandy’s granddaughters (with their mum Sue and myself!)

A lot of folk have been asking about the Big Breakfast and will it be happening this year.  Well, the answer is hopefully YES.  Once the refurbishment has finished it would be wonderful to hold another Big Breakfast in conjunction with a Café Church service so please, as they say…… WATCH THIS SPACE!

So, looking forward to next year—we will be back at Mearns Kirk in our own hall, so please mark your diaries and calendars for the 10th to 16th May 2020 Christian Aid Week.  To everybody who supported Christian Aid Week this year by giving a donation or buying a plant—a HUGE massive thank you.

SUNDAY CLUB BAKING SALE

Update—As we have now stopped door to door collections, we are always thinking of ways to raise money for Christian Aid and Sam Brooks from our Sunday Club and Little Stars came up with a great idea this year to have a “Bake Sale”.

This would then involve the children with Christian Aid Week

It proved to be a genius idea and a huge success with the children really getting into selling and sampling the goodies!

Thank you to all the parents for their support and baking and for all the other bakers who prepared all the most tempting display for our sale.  I am so delighted to say that the Bake Sale raised a wonderful £244.

Massive thanks to everybody for supporting the sale and I hope you all enjoyed your treats and your waistlines are not feeling the pinch too much!
